Augmented reality today: where it actually works (and where it doesn't yet)

Augmented reality today has two floors: the glasses, 7 million units sold in 2025 but barely available outside the US, and the AR that runs on the phone your customer already owns. Where it delivers results now, and the three questions that decide whether to invest.

Augmented reality today: where it actually works (and where it doesn't yet)

Augmented reality today is no longer a promise, and not yet what the concept videos show: it has become two things at once. On one side, the glasses, which are finally selling for real but still reach few people and few countries. On the other, the augmented reality that runs on the phone your customer already carries — that one is already an operation, and it is where a company gets results today.

Mixing up the two floors is the mistake that costs the most money. Decide by looking at the upper floor and you postpone everything waiting for hardware; look at the lower one and you ship something working this week.

The numbers upstairs: the glasses

The augmented reality market is projected at US$ 125.1 billion in 2026, growing 25.4% a year through 2031. The figure is impressive, but the hardware share is far smaller than it looks: IDC projects around 13.6 million devices sold across the whole year, reaching 27.3 million by 2030.

For comparison: 13.6 million is less than the world sells in phones in three days. And the real growth is in light glasses, without full immersion — the smart glasses category grew 167% in the first quarter of 2026, at roughly 2.25 million units in a single quarter.

What drives this is not science fiction: Meta and EssilorLuxottica sold more than 7 million glasses in 2025, tripling everything they had sold before combined. Except that the model with a display, the Ray-Ban Display, is still restricted to the United States. Samsung's Galaxy XR is sold directly only in the US and South Korea. Apple Vision Pro is available in 12 countries, and the lighter, cheaper version was pushed to 2028 while Apple moves people to its own glasses.

Translated for whoever sells in Brazil, Spain, France or anywhere else: the device in the ads is not in your customer's hand, and it will not be next year.

Where the glasses already work

There is one place where this hardware already pays for itself: industry. The mature use is the field technician who sees the diagram overlaid on the machine, or who calls an expert seeing exactly what they see. Market forecasts follow that split — enterprise glasses should go from 3.7 million units in 2026 to 14.9 million in 2030, and the fastest-growing slice is optical see-through glasses (XREAL, Viture, RayNeo), from 3 to 12.2 million over the same period.

The pattern is always the same: it works when the cost of the mistake is high and the expert is far away. Maintenance on a stopped machine, complex assembly, line training. In none of those cases does the end customer need glasses — the company buys the equipment, for its own staff.

Downstairs: the AR already in your customer's pocket

Meanwhile, virtually every phone sold in recent years opens augmented reality with nothing to install. Android does it through Google Scene Viewer, the iPhone through AR Quick Look, and both are triggered by an ordinary link, inside the browser. This is what people call WebAR.

The practical gap is enormous. An AR app asks the customer to search the store, download 80 MB and create an account — and most give up before that. A link opens the camera in two taps. For almost every commercial use, the link is enough; the app only earns its cost when the experience needs finer tracking or repeated use, and we run through that math in our article on what an augmented reality app costs.

Where AR delivers results today

  • Retail and e-commerce: the customer places the product in their own space before buying. Industry surveys point to two to three times higher conversion and up to 40% fewer returns — numbers published by vendors, so optimistic, but the direction repeats across all of them.   • Industry and field service: instructions overlaid on the part, with the remote expert seeing the same scene.
  • Education: what is expensive, dangerous or invisible — anatomy, an engine from inside, a cell — becomes an object you can examine in class.
  • Events and points of sale: a marker printed on the flyer, the menu or the packaging that makes the object appear through the camera.
  • Real estate and projects: showing what does not exist yet, in the place where it will exist.

The criterion: three questions before investing

The right question is not "has augmented reality arrived?". It is whether it solves a problem of yours. Three questions answer that in five minutes:

  1. Does your customer already own the device? If the experience requires glasses, it is an innovation pilot, and the budget has to be a pilot's budget. If it runs on their phone, it can be an operation.
  2. Is the problem one of spatial imagination? AR settles doubts about size, fit, how something looks in the room and how it works inside. It does not settle price, lead time or trust in the brand — for those, a good photo and a good page do more.
  3. Does a 3D model exist? This is what stalls most projects. Without the file, there is no AR. If the part was drawn in CAD, it can almost always be reused; if it does not exist, that is modelling work, and it belongs in the budget.

Where it is still not worth it

It is worth saying what the technology does not deliver. Consumer glasses are still an enthusiast market, geographically restricted. Experiences that depend on recognising the face or body precisely remain uneven outside dedicated apps. And floor tracking fails on smooth, shiny surfaces with no reference points — there, the answer is to anchor the model to an image target, a printed card or label, which is what brings stability and restores a sense of size.
