The digital whiteboard is the piece of technology that shows up most often in a school budget, and the one that disappoints most afterwards. Not because the product is bad, but because the decision is usually made on screen size and price, when what determines the outcome is something else. This is the checklist we run before recommending a panel to a school.
What a digital whiteboard actually is
It is a large touch panel that replaces the whiteboard and the projector at the same time. It plugs in, runs its own system, opens the lesson material, accepts writing with a finger or a pen, and keeps what was done — the lesson can leave the board as a file and reach the student later. That last part is what separates it from an ordinary board: what was written is not wiped at the end of the class.
Panel, TV with a touch frame, or interactive projector?
Three routes, with different prices and different headaches. The interactive panel is the complete answer: high brightness, precise touch, built-in system, no lamp to replace. A large TV with a touch frame is cheaper and works, but writing precision is lower and you depend on a computer wired to it. The interactive projector is the only one that throws a very large image in a tight space, and it is the one that suffers most from ambient light and lamp or laser maintenance.
The rule of thumb: a room with a big window and no blackout blind rules out the projector. A tight budget and light use tolerate the TV with a frame. Daily use with frequent writing calls for the panel.
The right size comes from the room, not the catalogue
This is the most expensive mistake and the easiest to avoid. Screen size is not chosen from the size of the room, but from the distance of the furthest student.
There is a standard for it: DISCAS, from AVIXA (ANSI/INFOCOMM V202.01:2016), which sets image size from the ratio between the distance of the farthest viewer and the height of the image. For reading ordinary classroom content — what the standard calls basic decision making — the practical reference is that the furthest student should not sit beyond roughly five to six screen heights. AVIXA publishes its own calculator for this.
Translated into a purchase: measure the distance from the board to the back row, divide by six, and you have the minimum image height. A 75-inch 16:9 screen is about 93 cm high, which gives a reach of roughly 5.5 m. If your room is 8 m deep, 75 inches will not do — and no configuration setting fixes that afterwards.
Mounting height: seeing versus reaching
Here sits a conflict almost nobody anticipates. The higher the board, the better for the back row. The lower it is, the better for whoever has to write on it.
Classroom installation guidance usually puts the bottom of the screen between 1.0 m and 1.2 m from the floor, and the choice within that range depends on the age of the students. But one limit is not negotiable: the usable writing area has to be within reach of a student in a wheelchair. If the board was mounted thinking only about the sightline from the back row, it excludes exactly the student the technology could help most.
When the two requirements do not fit together, the answer is a height-adjustable mount — more expensive to buy and the only honest solution.
What to check on the spec sheet
Simultaneous touch points. This is the number that decides whether two or three students can work on the screen at once, or whether the board is always a one-person device. For group work, too few touch points make the activity impossible.
System and update horizon. The panel runs its own operating system. Ask how many years it receives updates — that is what decides whether, four years from now, the device still opens the applications the school uses. It is the detail least likely to be in the catalogue and the one that shortens useful life the most.
Working offline. Writing, saving and opening a local file have to work with the network down. If the board becomes an inert slab when the internet drops, it is not fit for daily use.
Brightness and anti-glare treatment. A room with a side window and no blind demands more brightness and a matte surface. This is what separates the nice showroom demo from the real experience at ten in the morning.
The pen. If it needs a battery or pairing, you have just created a maintenance routine. A passive pen, which is just a stylus, almost never causes trouble.
The cost that is not in the panel price
The supplier's quote covers the equipment. The school also pays for: the wall mount or the wheeled stand, a power point in the right place, a network point (wi-fi at the back of the room tends to be unreliable), installation, teacher training, and the teaching hours that training consumes. On a multi-room project, add spare parts — pens disappear.
Decide early between wall mounting and a wheeled stand. The stand costs more and lets one board serve two or three rooms, which changes the maths when the budget does not cover the whole school.
The mistake that turns the board into an expensive projector
This is the most common pattern, and it is not technical. The school buys the panel, runs a two-hour demo with the sales rep, and from then on the teacher uses the board to show slides — exactly what the old projector already did, for a fraction of the price.
What changes that outcome is mundane and almost always cut from the budget: a ready-made lesson script for the first weeks, someone in the school who can fix the small problem without raising a ticket, and the decision that the student goes up to the screen. As long as only the teacher touches the panel, the board is an expensive whiteboard.
