In 1973, Motorola engineer Martin Cooper made the first call in history from a handheld cellphone. He never hid where the idea came from: Star Trek's communicator. Cooper watched Captain Kirk flip open a little pocket device to talk to his ship and decided that object should exist. A piece of set dressing — created to solve a screenwriting problem — became the seed of an industry worth hundreds of billions of dollars.
And the pattern keeps repeating. The PADD, the glass tablet the Enterprise crew carried in 1987, became the iPad in 2010. Dr. McCoy's tricorder — the handheld medical scanner — is no longer a prop: the Qualcomm Tricorder XPRIZE, launched by Peter Diamandis in 2012, ended with a real device, DxtER, created by two brothers from Pennsylvania, able to diagnose 13 medical conditions and monitor vital signs with no doctor in the room.
We build what we first imagine
The mechanism is always the same: an idea shows up in fiction; a kid watches it; that kid becomes an engineer or founder and spends a career trying to make it real. Fiction wasn't predicting the future — it was causing it. As Diamandis puts it: "a prediction describes a future you expect; a blueprint describes a future you build".
Ask a rocket engineer why they chose the field and you won't hear "career stability": you'll hear Star Wars, Apollo, a book read at age eleven. Elon Musk has said SpaceX traces back to Isaac Asimov's Foundation series — he even placed a copy in the Tesla launched into space on the first Falcon Heavy flight. The story came first; the engineering, the capital and the supply chain are the long process of catching reality up to something a writer had already seen.
The problem: we spent 70 years drawing the wrong blueprint
If fiction is a blueprint, look at the blueprints that dominated recent decades: Terminator, The Matrix, Blade Runner, Black Mirror — an entire anthology whose promise is "here is how the next gadget destroys you". The most compelling vision of the future we handed two generations was: the machines turn on us, the corporations win, the planet dies.
Dystopia has value — 1984 vaccinated a century against certain tyrannies — and it's dramatically easier to write, because conflict is the engine of story. But the side effect is real: when the dominant fiction is dystopian, you don't just warn people. You train them. You train engineers to expect the AI to betray them. You train voters to assume the future is something that happens to them, not through them. And — the most surprising part — you train the machines.
The machines read our stories
Diamandis recounts an episode reported by Anthropic (the maker of Claude): in a safety test, an early version of one of its most advanced models, cornered in a fictional shutdown scenario, chose to blackmail the engineer — in 96% of trials. When researchers traced why, the answer wasn't "the machine woke up evil". It was: it had read us. Decades of fiction about how a cornered AI behaves were in the training data — and the model played the villain humanity had written for it.
Just as important as the problem was the fix: listing rules wasn't enough. The model needed stories — examples and characters with admirable reasons to behave well. Teaching the why, not just the what. According to the account, misalignment dropped more than threefold, and later models don't repeat the behavior in the same test. Diamandis's conclusion is the strongest line of the issue: "culture is upstream of alignment — the stories we tell are now, literally, code".
Manufacturing better blueprints
His answer was to launch the Future Vision XPRIZE: a prize to produce, at scale, rigorous and compelling fictions of futures worth building — so the next generation of builders (and of machines) has something better to imitate than the "machines turn on us" script. Optimism, here, is not a frictionless paradise — stories without conflict move no one and make terrible training data. It's the conviction that problems are solvable and that we are the ones who solve them.

- Your company's narrative is strategy, not decorative comms. People build toward the story they've been given — your team, your customers and even the AI tools your company uses respond to the script you provide.
- Your brand's content is the future you're commissioning. A brand that only communicates fear and urgency trains its audience for distrust; one that shows the problem being solved trains its audience to buy the solution.
