Yes… and no. You'll understand why shortly:
On one hand, yes, all signs point to this being the year of the great Construction Industry recovery:
According to a survey conducted by the Construction Industry Union of the State of São Paulo (Sinduscon-SP) and the Fundação Getulio Vargas (FGV), the sector's GDP closed last year with a 2 percent increase and is projected to grow 3 percent this year.
Furthermore, job openings are also expected to improve significantly: the estimate is that the sector will close the year with 2.33 million employed workers, according to Odair Senra, president of Sinduscon-SP.
We're talking about a 1.8 percent increase compared to last year!
This means, according to a report by R7 published this month, that the Construction Industry could generate 150,000 jobs before the end of this year.
A very significant growth, especially considering 27 consecutive declines in the sector over recent years.
On the other hand, this does not mean it will be a good year for everyone working in the Construction Industry…
This is largely due to the resistance many professionals have to updating their skills and adopting new industry practices. Research conducted by Farmer Review confirms this:
The data showed that, over the past 20 years, the sector recorded the lowest productivity growth of any industry, lagging behind Manufacturing, Services, and various other sectors of the economy.
According to Adimilson Moura, Director of Construtora Escala, Brazil's construction methods are, in general, rooted in the 1960s. “It is one of the sectors with the lowest level of evolution in Brazil and in the world. The entire production chain needs to be rethought”, states Moura.
“If we always stick to the mindset that ‘what's working is good enough,' we'll never move forward. Before long, what's working will need an update. And it's better to update ahead of time and be pioneers than to later have to chase technologies from other countries that will charge more for them. We have the workforce and the smart people to do this domestically.” – Pedro Henrique, CEO of Obrazul.
When asked about what could be done to drive innovation in the Construction Industry, these were the responses:
“We need to start rethinking the integration of all of this. It's about public policy, sectoral integration of the construction market, and on the other side, the Construtechs. It's the integration of these 3 actors in a way that generates a satisfactory product for the client, who needs a lower price.” – Adimilson Moura, Director of Construtora Escala.
“If construction companies give small startups a chance to solve their problems, I believe those startups can help others, and that will increasingly fuel this cycle.” — Pedro Henrique, CEO of Obrazul.
It's no coincidence that, while large construction companies struggle to stay afloat, companies with an innovation-driven DNA (such as QuintoAndar and Loft) quickly become unicorns. Would you agree?
Now that you know all this, what will you do to stay as up to date as possible in 2020 and reap the full benefits of the first signs of this great Construction Industry Reinvention?
One of our ways of helping professionals who are seeking this update is the ConstruTech Conference 2020, the country's leading Construction and Innovation event.
In fact, this year Loft will be there! Their representative will be none other than Florian Hagenbuch, founder and CO-CEO of Brazil's most recent unicorn, who will speak to more than 2,000 professionals attending the event.
It will take place on February 19th, from 9am to 6pm, at PRO Magno Centro de Eventos, in São Paulo.
You will leave with a thorough understanding of how new technologies (still not widely adopted) and shifts in consumer habits are increasing operational efficiency in the Construction Industry.
We will bring together not only the most innovative professionals in the market, but also the largest Construction Industry startup fair, all in one place!
It will be an opportunity not only to extract knowledge from the greatest minds in the country's Construction industry, but also to connect with a wide range of professionals and technology startups.
