What is the future of Hollywood?
Hollywood is worth billions of dollars, but what happens when you can simply talk to an AI and have it create a personalized film starring whoever you want?
That is the vision behind Stable Diffusion, Stability AI's open-source text-to-image generator. It is a community effort to build an AI that allows anyone to create anything.
As Emad puts it: “Words go in and everything you describe comes out.”
To build Stable Diffusion, Emad and his team initially took 100,000 GB of images (2 billion images) and compressed all of it into a 2 GB file that runs on your laptop or phone, without internet.
Since launching the technology last year, they have drastically accelerated the model, going from generating a single image every 6 seconds to generating 60 images per second — which is essentially video.
At my private Abundance360 Summit in March, Emad showcased a 7-minute animated video called Anime Rock, Paper, Scissors that was created using Stability AI technology. And just in the past few weeks, we have seen several text-to-video models released by NVIDIA and others.
So when will you be able to create your own real-time rendered film simply by talking to an AI? When will we be able to generate a live-action movie?
Emad believes we will see this capability within this decade:
“In the next five years, I think the Ready Player One OASIS World — minus the microtransactions — will be here.”
What we are doing with generative AI is removing the barriers through which any visual medium can be created instantly.
So, is Hollywood scared or excited?
Emad says the reactions are mixed.
What is clear is that Hollywood's entire business model is about to be disrupted. For example, what does the process of making a film look like when you can alter it using only words? Increase the lighting, make it more dramatic, replace the lead actor.
Generative AI tools, such as Stable Diffusion, are democratizing creativity and imagination, and completely transforming the way we entertain ourselves.

I asked Chat GPT what the impact of AI on the film industry will be, and this is what it told me:
Artificial intelligence (AI) has the potential to impact the film industry in a number of ways, both in the creation process and in the distribution and consumption of content. Some of the key areas in which AI may influence the film industry include:
Screenwriting: AI can assist in the scriptwriting process by generating ideas, dialogue, and even complete plot structures based on data from existing scripts or other sources of inspiration.
Animation and visual effects: AI can accelerate the creation of animations and visual effects by automatically generating realistic or stylized imagery, and by assisting in the simulation of character movements and interactions.
Editing and post-production: AI can assist in the film editing process by analyzing raw footage and suggesting cuts and transitions, as well as automatically adjusting sound, color, and other technical aspects of post-production.
Casting: AI can assist in the actor selection process by analyzing performance and appearance in relation to characters and the film's requirements, and by suggesting potential candidates for roles.
Audience analysis and marketing: AI can analyze audience behavior data and genre preferences, helping studios identify trends and predict the success of different types of films. This can support decision-making around film financing and production, as well as the development of effective marketing strategies.
Distribution and recommendation: AI can help optimize content distribution across streaming platforms and other channels by analyzing consumption patterns and recommending films and TV shows based on users' preferences and viewing history.
Content generation: AI can be used to automatically create film trailers, posters, and other promotional materials, and even generate additional content such as deleted scenes, interviews, and documentaries.
Virtual and augmented reality: AI can be applied in the development of immersive virtual and augmented reality experiences, allowing viewers to interact with content in new and innovative ways.
While AI may offer many benefits to the film industry, there are also concerns and challenges to be addressed, such as the originality of AI-generated content, copyright issues, data privacy, and the possibility that AI may replace certain jobs in the sector. It is important to strike a balance between the adoption of AI and the preservation of human creativity and artistic expression.
My opinion on how AI will affect the film industry
AI will have an enormous impact on the film industry because anyone with a smartphone — which is to say, nearly everyone — will have the potential to create a short or even a feature-length film capable of generating millions of dollars in return. In other words, anyone could become a competitor to the world's most advanced studios.
Will this put a lot of people out of work? The answer is yes. Will it create a lot of jobs? The answer is also yes. Imagine a young person in Africa making a film that brings millions of dollars into their account. Imagine the impact that will have on their community. When that person spends that money in their town, how many families will benefit?
I believe the impact of AI on the film industry will be similar to the impact social media had on television. How many people do you know who spend hours in front of the television today? How many people do you know who spend hours on social media?
The money will change hands. And the poor will have a golden opportunity this time. This time, those who have been left behind will finally have their chance.
