There is growing discussion about the role of innovation and new technologies inside the classroom. Gamification, augmented reality, virtual reality and even artificial intelligence are among the "new solutions" for education…
But if we could choose one technology essential to reinvent public education in Brazil, it would be none of the above — for a simple reason: none of them work without internet.
Brazil has the second worst school connectivity in the world: only 28.3 percent of students reported having access to the internet and computers in the classroom, according to a study conducted by Iede (Interdisciplinaridade e Evidências no Debate Educacional), based on data from the Programme for International Student Assessment (Pisa) of 2015.
Recently, the Ministry of Education (MEC) announced it "will connect 70,000 public schools in 5,296 municipalities to the internet" by 2020.
This initiative could open a new window of opportunities for schools that previously had limited resources, enabling them to partner with startups and major technology companies to bring new tools and solutions into the classroom.
Google for Education is a great example.
It is an initiative by Google itself to empower educators and public and private institutions at all levels (primary, secondary, and higher education).
The Head of Google for Education Brazil, Alexandre Campos, in an interview with Correio Braziliense, explained how it works: "The teacher can personalize activities for different groups in the classroom. If one group has learned what is needed and can move forward independently, the educator can devote more time to helping those who need to reach the level of the more advanced group, so that everyone arrives at a common minimum standard."
Imagine what it would be like to have that level of connectivity and personalized education for each individual student…
All of this with accessible, easy-to-use technology, backed by a company the size of Google to support you every step of the way…
StartSe was so impressed by Google's initiative that it invited Alexandre Campos to speak further about it and about how Google for Education can help you in your classroom at the Edtech Conference 2020, taking place in São Paulo on February 11th.
