The Career Ladder Just Broke. What Now?
By Peter Diamandis
The age of employment is coming to an end… The age of entrepreneurship is on the rise At the last Abundance Summit, Stanford economist Erik Brynjolfsson warned: “We are witnessing the fastest transformation of the labor market since the shift to remote work during COVID-19.” He was not exaggerating.

Dario Amodei, CEO of Anthropic, predicts that AI could eliminate half of all entry-level white-collar jobs within five years, pushing unemployment as high as 20%. Occupations most exposed to AI have already seen a 13% decline in employment. For over a century, our schools trained children to get jobs. Take tests. Follow instructions. Earn a salary. But that world is evaporating.

The future will not reward job seekers, but those who create opportunities. A Reinvented World On my podcast Moonshots, Kevin Weil, Chief Product Officer at OpenAI, was direct: “Every product, every service, every device we use today was built before AI. All of them will be reinvented.” This reinvention is nothing less than a complete reconstruction of economic value creation. Your MTP: The New Moat In a world where AI automates tasks, memorized knowledge loses its value.

What matters most? The quality of your questions and the purpose that drives you. Your Massive Transformative Purpose (MTP) is no longer “corporate jargon”. It is a survival strategy. It enables you to: Build movements and communitiesAttract top talentInspire products and servicesMaintain focus during hypergrowthAlign people beyond politicsMy own MTP is simple: “To inspire and guide entrepreneurs to create a hopeful, compelling, and abundant future for humanity.”

Curiosity > Careers The “career ladder” is over. Curiosity and adaptability now outweigh static career planning. The most valuable skill is not what you know… but how quickly you can learn and reinvent what is possible. As Weil put it: “AI won't change that. It will only amplify it.” For entrepreneurs, the goal is clear: build companies that amplify human potential rather than replace it.

Time: The Ultimate Currency Eight billion people on Earth share one thing in common: 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and 365 days a year. How one uses their time determines the difference between wealth and poverty, and the quality of their life. The good news is that AI is the greatest time multiplier in history — the great equalizer. But time without direction leads to distraction, not transformation. Entrepreneurs who use AI to give people autonomy and meaning will shape the future.

Star Trek or Mad Max? We are at a crossroads. AI can create a future of abundance and amplified human potential, like Star Trek — or a Mad Max-style wasteland where humans are obsolete. The difference is purpose and entrepreneurship. Those who cultivate their MTP, embrace a curiosity mindset, and commit to entrepreneurship will dominate the next economy. Those who cling to employment as it once was will become economic refugees in their own careers.
